Okay before starting let me be clear about the difference between department and section.Â
Department: A department is a part of an organization or department is a large scale of activities where different kinds of mini activities will be performed.Â
Section: section is a small activity with a small assigned task.Â

Quality assurance is a department name where different kinds of quality activity have been performed.Â
There is a different working station that will help to meet the overall quality assurance performance. Incoming quality control, sewing quality control, finishing quality control, sample quality control, etc.Â
Each section is responsible for the different kinds of mini-assigned tasks. For example – incoming quality control is responsible for testing and assurance of fabric inspection GSM test, fabric shade band check, etc.Â

Store departmentÂ
The store department is the core functional department of the garment industry. Here basically two activities are performed.Â
- All received goodsÂ
- All Export goods.Â
Incoming and delivery-related activity is to be done in the Store Department.Â
There are 3 major sections under the store departmentÂ
- Fabric Store Section
- Trims and Accessories store sectionÂ
- Finished Godown/cartons store.Â
All sections have almost the same activities. We have covered another article with details of Store Departmental Activity.Â
However core functional activities of the store department are given below:Â
- Check and Ensure the Inventory
- Ensure goods are sent to check quality testÂ
- Stake the goods in the designated area.Â
- Ensure proper bin card systemÂ
- Non-conforming good handleÂ
- Received and delivered the goods as per requisition
Cutting Department
The Cutting Department will ensure the fabric panels in the sewing departments as per requirement.Â
Core functional activities of cutting departments are given below:Â
- Ensure and maintain a daily cutting plan vs cutting achievement.Â
- Ensure proper relaxation if applicable.Â
- Ensure the Quality test is okay before spreadingÂ
- Ensure proper spreading and numbering.Â
- Re-cut if needed
Some factories have a Fusing section in the cutting area. In that case, I need to perform the fusing on panels in the cutting department.Â
Sewing Department.Â
The sewing department is the heat of the garments department. This is the core department where maximum activity is value-added activity. Okay we will share about the value-added activity and non-value-added activity in garments section in another article.Â
However, the core activities of garment sewing departments are given below.Â
- Check and ensure every required material is ready before the style starts up.Â
- Ensure PP meetings for each style start-upÂ
- Ensure proper layoutÂ
- Ensure Internal Quality Check is performed in the production line.

Note # Here we considered the cutting, sewing, and finishing area as a department due to these departments covering a large scale for sub activity. If you call it as a section then the mother department will be the Operational Department. Then these working areas will be under the mother departments.Â
Finishing Departments
The finishing department is the final stage of the production process. Here performed below core functional activities.Â
- Ensure proper ironing
- Ensure Measurement of each garment’s key process.Â
- Ensure metal detection check
- Hand tag and hanger attached to the garments.Â
- Blister, Folding, and Cartons
Quality Assurance Department
The quality assurance department is vital in the garments section. Yes, Quality is a vital department due to every fault, error, problem, and findings going to the Quality department.Â
However core functional activities are given below
- Ensure Quality check for all Incoming fabric trims & Accessories.Â
- Ensure GSM test, shade band & shrinkage test, fabric inspection, and wash test are performed.Â
- Style-wise swatch cards makeÂ
- Ensure Quality check before and after spreading the sectionÂ
- After re-cut, checking, and forming Quality checking,Â
- Ensure TLS, mockup, and Quality check station in the workplace during production,Â
- Ensure Internal and External Quality Tests.Â
- Do Wash test report and analysis.Â
- Lot audit conduct,Â
- Cartons inspectionÂ
- Ensure all pre-final inspections. Â
- Ensure Quality Findings recap.Â
- Perform Internal Audit and Traceability Audit periodically.Â
Maintenance DepartmentsÂ
Maintenance departments are responsible to arrange and move the equipment everywhere as per requirement.Â
However, the core functional activities of maintenance departments are given below:Â
- Ensure and organize the machinery and equipment as needed in the workplace.Â
- Check and ensure the machine is serviced regularly.Â
- Ensure the instant machine servicing on a corrective action basis.Â
- Ensure the machine calibration and update regularly.Â
- Ensure lighting check and update the workplace light requirement.Â

Industrial Engineering department
Industrial Engineering or IE departments are doing Engineering departments to make the garment process faster with less time and less energy and cost.Â

- Ensure proper Operational Bulletin or OB for machine layout.Â

Merchandiser DepartmentÂ
Merchandiser department is responsible for connecting with suppliers and vendors. The core activity of the Merchandiser departments is given below
- Relationship management with customer and Buyer associate merchant.Â
- Follow up product product-related activities and supply information to the team.Â
- Sample review and approval of the swatch card.Â
- Production Cost analysis and Product profit meringue calculation
- Update product, and style-related information regularly to the customer, working people, and ERP software on both the company and buyer website.Â
- Port booking and follower activities for delivery on time.Â
Sample & CAD DepartmentÂ
CAD means computer-aided design is responsible for designing the pattern by using modern software.Â
The core functional activity of CAD departments is given below:Â
- Develop the sample as per the details information from the merchant or buyer.Â
- During the PP Meeting, pass detailed information to the production people.Â

This human resource department is responsible for recruitment and organizes the manpower as per requirement.Â
